Education Kills

Only a few weeks after Chrihanna gate the internet faithful have been made privy to more senseless acts of domestic violence between young Black entertainers. This time all of the action has been caught on video.

While Charles Hamilton and the young woman in question are nowhere near as popular as Chris Brown or Rihanna their recent run in has been making the rounds on many popular blog sites. What I find strange is that the blogosphere is not up in arms about the young woman punching Charles in the face. Granted, he was being a bit of a prick toward her and her outrage is justified. What is not justified, is her reaction to his behavior. Had Charles responded in kind by returning blows I’m sure MTV News, CNN, What About our Daughters, and Miss Info would have been all over the story the same day that the video leaked. Since Charles did not return blows the story is of no interest to those in the know. The fact that there has been NO response or outrage makes me wonder a number of things:

a) Did people care about the Chrihanna Gate because they were both mega stars or because of the severity of the beating that took place ?

b) Do people actually have a problem with domestic violence or do many people deem it acceptable in certain situations.

c) Why hasn’t the conversation about domestic violence taken center stage yet ?

d) Is it even considered domestic violence if the violence is from a woman against a man ? If so, why no outrage? If not, isn’t that somewhat hypocritical ?

So…what say you ?

Digital Natives

Digital natives can find you online…why try to hide ?

The babies found me…several of them actually found me completely independent of one another.

Maybe I’ll start posting secrets about my feelings about home work, class work, grades, etc.

Stay tuned!

I finally get NCLB

On May 21, 2009, in Opinions, Personal Stories, Teaching, Theory, by Jovan

I once worked in a building that did nothing but blame teachers for student failure. We had entirely too much oversight and micro management, yet, in that environment brilliant teachers were created. We received an unholy amount of PD and as a result we all became experts in differentiation, culturally relevant pedgagoy, authentic assessment, etc.

I didn’t realize it at the time…but all of the stress that I felt and blamed on NCLB, I now interpret as knowledge and experience gained that I attribute to NCLB. Pushing accountability works…even if the brunt of the responsibility falls on the shoulders of teachers. It forces us to be better teachers…or it forces those of us who can’t cut it out of the classroom.

My new place of employ is full of potential but lacking in accountability. Co-workers frequently come to work late or not at all. Students often roam the halls freely and without a pass. Teacher turnover is the highest I’ve ever seen or heard about. Planning ahead for the unforeseen is nearly nonexistent. Yet, this school is successful in spite of the lack of accountability and oversight.

I finally get what NCLB is trying to do. NCLB is trying to get schools that are mismanaged that serve demographic groups that are often overlooked or ignored to go the extra mile and use research based strategies to moves these kids forward. NCLB is trying to get educators to plan for success rather than haphazardly fall backward into results. NCLB is pushing planning and accountability…although it does so through sanctions, intimidation, and punishment.

While the manner in which NCLB has been implemented may be called into question, the motives and goals cannot.

NCLB…I’m sorry for every doubting your intentions…now…your actions…that’s another story.

Obama's Haircut

The young man in the photo wanted to see if the President’s haircut felt like his own. For the first time in our country’s history…the answer is yes.

Bittersweet

On May 16, 2009, in Uncategorized, by Jovan

My old school made AYP again for the first time since I began work there and I was a huge part in making that happen.

I worked as department chair and as interim academic coach regularly putting in 12 hour days to create engaging lessons for my students. I literally spent thousands of dollars on school supplies, technology, and anything else that I thought could make the math more real to my students.

I just got word that the math department achieved an overall 80% pass rate on the spring 2009 administration of the GCRCT.

The victory is sweet because I know much of their success comes as a direct result of the time, money, and effort I and the teachers in my department put in. My students won’t have to attend summer school and they can really see that my over the top teaching style was what they needed to be successful.

It’s bitter because the system let me go because of technicalities, mis-communication, and budget cuts.

I helped that school make AYP at the beginning of my time with them…and at the end of my time with them. Not bad to book end your time with an organization with success.

On to the next adventure…

Meet me at the crossroads

On May 14, 2009, in Personal Stories, by Jovan

I’m finally at a place in my career where I’m making moves on my own terms. I had to lose everything in order to gain it all back again.

My possibilities in this job really seem endless now. I’m free to be experimental, go off on intellectual time wasting tangents that stretch my students more than they thought they could be stretched and still deliver stellar standardized test scores to the powers that be.

I can set expectations so high that they can’t reach them but they grow tenfold in the process of trying to.

It wasn’t always like this.

That new new

On May 14, 2009, in Uncategorized, by Jovan

So…I’ve been at the new spot long enough to know that I’m pretty happy here.

Things are very different than at the old spot but this place has grown on me. The kids are great, the new Principal is very similar to what I’m used to, and there is so much opportunity for growth here.

I think I can do a lot of good in a spot like this. There are, of course, some things left to be desired such as more access to technology in the classroom, newer materials, and a larger, more equipped media center.

Overall, I’m dealing with less stress, more engaged students, and an easier school day.

The new school will never replace the old school, but I am definitely starting to dig this place.
